This chair was created in response to a question that I asked myself; could a truly comfortable lounge chair be made out of solid wood? I felt it could be done and went about finding a way to create comfort and pliability with a naturally rigid, linear material.

After spending time in my sketchbook as well as looking at the solutions of others I arrived at the solution of cantilevered slats. After stress testing my materials to determine what would be the necessary minimum of dimensions I finalized the design. A model built in Solidworks acted as both a way to view the final design and at the same time produce working drawings. The overall design works with the cantilevered slats to create a light linear aesthetic that remains in tension visually in the same way the slats are under tension as they support the weight of the user.

Designed and built over a period of 5 weeks, this chair is constructed out of solid white ash with stainless steel hardware connecting the slats to the structure of the chair.
