Black Walnut, Steel, White Powder Coat

A personal project built this year. The goal was to design a desk that was strong, stable, disassemblable, visually clean and yet still possessing a distinct personality. The design process for the desk was a two month period of hand sketching, CAD builds in Solidworks, material tests, and size mockups. Following finishing the design, I worked with a sheet metal supplier and a coatings company to have the steel elements laser-cut, bent, welded and finally powder coated. The rest of the build was done personally.

Excited by the surprising strength and comfort of solid wood that I had found in my previous chair, I wanted to push my material even farther. This time exploring both material and process, I began bending my slats with steam.

This experimental stool, brought even an even greater amount of liveliness and responsiveness to a solid wood piece.

White Ash, Stainless Steel Hardware

The most conceptual piece of furniture that I have made. A low slung lounge chair in form and an exploration of trust and comfort in purpose. Every contact surface of the chair is constructed of extremely cantilevered slats. This provides a surprisingly comfortable and responsive sitting position for a piece made of solid wood. However the cantilevered seat, back and arms give the ‘sitter’ moments of forced trust and mental discomfort the first time that he sits down.

This chair began a number of interesting discussions and reflections upon the levels of trust that we place in furniture, sometimes without thought and the depth of ‘personality’ that can be imbued into something as common as a chair.
